A new house in San Francisco, on a narrow plot, for a family of 3. Wife and husband work from home and need their own separate space. 3 Houses connected into 1 house.
Design process
Step 1: The house volume is split in two volumes, one for the home office, street facing, one for the house.
Step 2: Extrusion and compression create a lane.
Step 3: The third volume is lifted up.
Step 4: Gable shaped roof.
Step 5: The roof as representation.
House as Owners' portrait
The 2 office spaces created for husband and wife are fronting the street and are turned inwards to open to the house courtyard, to offset the direct sun. A catwalk connects them to the house. A terrace above the house adds a space with Bay views. Indeed a portraiture of a young San Francisco family.
